Whole core steady state gas permeameter (Wholeperm)

The Wholeperm instrument is dedicated to measuring both horizontal and vertical permeability to gas (air, helium, nitrogen...) of full size core samples at room conditions. This apparatus can provide enlightening results in the context of heterogeneous, anisotropic rock studies. The Wholeperm comprises a gas permeameter console, a full size core holder and a data acquisition computer station. Gas permeability determination is achieved by virtue of the steady-state method. The latter implies a constant pressure gradient or flow rate across the sample. A core sample, fitted in a Viton sleeve is inserted into the core holder. Gas can be injected over a wide range of pressures and flow rates. The core holder inlet and outlet pressures are continuously monitored by two inline pressure transducers while the gas flow rate is reported by a high-grade mass flow meter, allowing the computation of slip factor and the Klinkenberg permeability versus reciprocal mean pressure relationship. After taking a sufficient amount of data, a provided excel template performs a linear interpolation, yielding the equivalent liquid permeability and slip factor. The software can also be used for equipment calibration.
