The mechanical strength of industrial catalysts and adsorbents is of outstanding importance for their manufacturing and packaging, as well as during loading and operation in the reactors. Two different mechanical characteristics are measured to determine this mechanical strength : the crush resistance and the attrition / abrasion resistance.
Vinci-Technologies offers two testers to determine the crushing strength of catalysts in various forms, such as pellets, extrudates or spherical particles : the Grain Crushing Strength Tester (GCS) and the Bulk Crushing Strength Tester (BCS).
GCS Tester (ASTM D-4179 & D-6175)
The GCS Tester consists of an automatic press controlled electronically:
- The grain of catalyst is placed on the anvil of an appropriate transducer (scale 0-20 daN, limited to a real force of 17.5 daN) and a mobile piston, operated by a stepping motor, crushes the grain.
- An electronic device measures the peak value when the grain breaks and keeps it displayed on a digital display.
The apparatus is delivered with 2 sets of hammer / anvil : one for spherical catalyst grains, and one for extrudates and tablets.
Computerized GCS Tester (ASTM D-4179 & D-6175)
Vinci-Technologies proposes also a computerized version of the GCS tester. The GCS is upgraded in order to be connected to an Compact Industrial PC, with proprietary software and an electronic sliding calliper (for extrudates length measurement), in view of delivering analysis reports. This computerized version, which matches ASTM grain crushing method requirments, offers many advantages :
-
Shorter duration of test
-
Easy PC-monitoring of the crushing procedure
-
A visual interface allows to follow the different stages of the test (initialization, measurement and data acquisition) on graphs and charts
-
Data saving and processing : results of tests and calculations are provided on a comprehensive analytical report
