The mechanical strength of industrial catalysts and adsorbents is of outstanding importance for their manufacturing and packaging, as well as during loading and operation in the reactors. Two different mechanical characteristics are measured to determine this mechanical strength : the crush resistance and the attrition / abrasion resistance.
Vinci-Technologies offers two testers to determine the crushing strength of catalysts in various forms, such as pellets, extrudates or spherical particles : the Grain Crushing Strength Tester (GCS) and the Bulk Crushing Strength Tester (BCS).
BCS Tester
Generally speaking, this equpemnt allows determination of the resistance to crushing of a bed of grains whose maximum dimension is 6 mm. The equipment consists of an automated press controlled by a stepping motor :
-
The sample-holding cell, a stainless steel cylinder of standardized dimensions, is placed on a stress transducer (scale 0-200 daN; other scales are available).
-
A stainless steel piston operated by the stepping motor crushes the catalyst bed.
-
The pressure stages planned in the standard (there are 10 to 195 daN, different loads available on request) are pre-selected. The system is fitted with a force compensator in order to keep the crushing force for a given stage constant during 3 minutes.
