JCA Jet Cup Attrition tester
Description
The Jet Cup Attrition (JCA) apparatus is designed to measure the attrition resistance of catalytic materials, particularly fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts and additives, under controlled and accelerated conditions. In accordance with ASTM D8414, the apparatus subjects a small catalyst sample to high-velocity, humidified air that forces particles to collide with each other and with the walls of a jet cup. These interactions intentionally generate fine particles through abrasion and fracture, simulating the mechanical stress experienced by catalysts in industrial FCC units. The apparatus includes a fines disengagement chamber that selectively separates particles smaller than 20 µm for accurate collection and measurement. By quantifying the mass of fines generated per hour, the JCA provides a standardized Jet Cup Index (JCI) that enables reliable comparison, ranking, and quality control of catalyst attrition performance across laboratories and production batches
