Monitoring fractures in deep geothermal , CO2 storage and nuclear waste reservoirs with the GEOFRAC

The GEOFRAC tool has been developed to enhance permanent seismic and micro seismic monitoring. It plays an essential role for the safety and efficiency: (i) of the production of renewable energies and low CO2 emissions, such as + deep geothermal energy, (ii) the storage of CO2 , (iii) the geological storage of nuclear waste (the energy and ecological future depends on nuclear power and nuclear power remains one of the pillars of the energy mix).
All of these processes involve the engineering of rock reservoirs under high stress levels, requiring careful monitoring of pre-existing and induced fractures around the target volume. The deployment of networks of permanent high-resolution seismic sensors, can provide an image of the evolution of fracturing in the volume of rock subjected to these stress changes and allow changes in the engineering process.

More specifically, micro seismic monitoring can provide:

* Information to minimize the risk of fractures due to deep geothermal stimulation or the injection of pressurized greenhouse gases
* Seismic risk monitoring around critical structures built for the containment of hazardous waste, eg. nuclear waste
* High resolution imagery of potential migration routes for captured and stored gas or leaking water in nuclear waste repositories.
